Kickstart Learning are seeking to recruit a passionate and inspiring teacher. The role will be based at the Kickstart Learning Centre in High Wycombe where there is a fully resourced classroom and a small gym for more physical activities as well as a garden for outdoor activities. Initially, the teacher is needed to take over the business owner’s sessions while she is on maternity leave. This will be one full day (9am-6pm) at the weekend (most likely Saturday) and three afternoons/evenings during the week (most likely Monday 4-7pm; and Tuesday and Wednesday 1:30-7:30pm). If this is successful, there will then be the opportunity to stay on at the business long term. Holidays must be taken during school holiday periods.
Kickstart Learning has been running for over two years and is currently operating at full capacity with a waiting list. We offer tutoring, mentoring and martial arts sessions for children usually aged 7 to 12. Please note, the teacher would only be expected to work with students in a tutoring capacity. Kickstart Learning’s tutoring sessions are highly practical in nature and often involve some form of physical exercise. The successful candidate will need to have a good level of fitness and be willing to join in with a variety of physical activities (such as football, badminton, boxing, Nerf guns etc.) Kickstart Learning sessions aim to always be fun and enjoyable and you must be a creative and dedicated teacher who strives to make any area of the curriculum fun.
Nearly all Kickstart Learning sessions are one-to-one and can cover English, Handwriting, Maths and 11+ preparation depending on the needs of each child. It is imperative that the teacher who is employed has a recognised teaching qualification (including QTS) and experience and knowledge of teaching KS2 children. They must also be willing to work with KS1 and KS3 children at times.
Kickstart Learning specialises in working with children who have learning differences (such as autism and ADHD) and more than half of the students have a diagnosed learning difference. Some students have emotional or behavioural difficulties although we do not work with children who exhibit severe behaviour issues that would not be suitable for a one-to-one setting. A key part of sessions is helping children understand their strengths and how they can use these to help overcome any difficulties. Growth mindset is an aspect that is covered regularly in sessions and must be something that the prospective teacher is aware of.
The prospective teacher must be highly sensitive to the emotional needs of children and be willing to use positive behaviour management strategies rather than sanctions. Kickstart Learning’s philosophy is that all behaviour is a form of communication and should be treated as such. Helping children understand their frustrations and finding more effective ways to express these frustrations is something that often comes up in sessions and the successful candidate must be someone who is patient and understanding. Training will be given to the successful candidate so they can understand more about the Kickstart Learning ethos and how to achieve this. The successful candidate will also go through a thorough induction process where they will observe the business owner with each of the students they will be teaching and, in addition, have a full handover meeting with regular support following this.
